Wanted Witch (Daughter of Darkness Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 110 ratings

A murder suspect? Well, that sucks.

My name is Mackenzie Adams and I'm a witch. Excuse me. Mage. The Council hates it when I use that term. I'm a Healer and Lightning Mage, which means I have the ability to cheat death and fry my enemies with a flick of my wrist.

Feeling the oppression from the Council of Mage and Magical Affairs to use me for my Healer ability, I yearn for independence. Yet even when a detective stops by my video game store late one night and informs me that I'm a suspect of a recent murder, the Council continues to pursue me.

With the help of my magical gamer friends and hot new boyfriend, I must go undercover to find the mage responsible before another body I'm connected to ends up dead. Not only do I battle external enemies throughout the city of Blackwood, but evidence mounts that necromancy and dark magic are at play.

It will require all my magic training to stop the unknown foe from killing more innocent people and clear my name before the lure of dark magic grabs me, too.

Disclaimer: My friends call me Zee, and I cuss, drink, and ride a motorcycle. If you're ok with that, then you're in for a helluva ride.

I chose to give this book 5 stars because I really enjoyed reading it. From the beginning to the end it was interesting and not one page of boring. Every time I had to put it down , I looked forward to reading it again. To finish the story.
I enjoyed the story itself, the magic was different and the characters lovable. It's everything I look for in a book.
Finally in the ending you get all the answers and some were very unexpected but good. I'm happy with the ending too. But you can tell there's still more to the story , more about Zees family so I guess that would come up in the next book. Which I'm looking forward to.
I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good enjoyable read and who loves magic , action and a little romance. pick this book! I was not disappointed.
Thank you to the author Val, for writing an awesome story.. keep it up.

This is gonna be an easy review to write. If you like Patricia Briggs "Mercy Thompson" books or Annie Bellet's "Twenty-Sided Sorceress" books then you will enjoy Wanted Witch just as much. I thought those books were great so, no shocker here, I had the same feeling here. That doesn't at all imply that any of these three authors copied each other - the books simply have the same "feel" and are written at the same high quality level.

Val O. Morris has created a well thought out world with a strong cast of characters and a truly kick-a** heroine. Wonderful action scenes that fit well into a strong plot. While this book does not end in a cliff-hanger (which I hate), there is enough left open that you just know the sequels to come are going to be equally enjoyable. I'm really looking forward to whenever the next book is e-published.

I never give five stars out (though I probably would for a few like Tolkein's LoTR, Herbert's original Dune, Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land or McCaffrey's first Dragonrider books), but I was really tempted here. A great book - but very addictive. I ended up reading it in one "sitting" (but it's 3am now, so I probably should've stopped at some earlier point).

Oh yes, just to note: I did not do this review in exchange for an eARC. I even missed out on the pre-order 99 cent sake and paid full price (3x as much). Might as well get that out there, though really I would've given an honest review on an eARC just as much.

Finally, the author offers a prequel ("Reborn") for free through her website. It's worth getting but will make more sense if you read Wanted Witch first and just look at it as a fun backstory. I did it the other way and could've avoided some confusion if I'd read Reborn second.

A for effort, C for execution.
"A passage just big enough to slide through if we stayed prone against it." That's just one of the stilted, painful sentences. The repeated attempts to show her contempt of the stereotypical overbearing magical world's overseers -she rolled her eyes a lot, the attempts at description "sewerage water" as opposed to sewage air?, this book susceptible and I could not engage.
Sorry but trying to jump on the urban paranormal bandwagon requires skills this writer does not possess.

Zee is a hell of a heroine. Who could sign up for "healing" in this death defying way? No an easy path but she is a tough cookie. Enjoyed the gamer aspects and the family twists. Take a read.

Interesting and entertaining story about Zee, Healer, death cheater and new mage in the block. She had her mage gang and together they were facing necromancers, lot of monsters, mages, zombies and all sort of things that bump in the night. I had not read the prequel when I read this book and had some questions so, just bought it to get the details I had missed. This story had action, magic, suspense, intrigue, lot of fights with the evil and strange characters.
